Most small business owners are petite bourgeoisie, not bourgeoisie. It is important to not conflate the two. There are very important differences that matter a whole lot when fascism or revolutions happen.
Right, good point, but doesn’t the petite bourgeoisie usually end up siding with the bourgeoisie during revolutions or when fascism happens? Like there is a reason that during riots, some small businesses get trashed with the big businesses.
On the contrary, historically fascist movements have always attacked the petite bourgeoise very early on in order to solidify an unrecoverable gap between the two classes. Refer to Italian and German history. However of course you’re right in that the petite bourgeoise would prefer to be a part of the oppressing power structure, but it isnt super relevant in my studies.
The most important thing to remember is that petite bourgeoisie still perform labor, they’re just ALSO exploiting people. The petite bourgeoise can be brought to heel by regulation and strong labor laws in a socialist government run by a communist party. The bourgeoise themselves, however, must be overthrown.
Where I live, small business owners usually start their own business because it’s hard for them to get a good job. They tend to be low on education, or they are immigrants or of immigrant descent.
Poverty or marginalization does not justify capitalist behavior. Obviously some small business owners are just decent people who are running their livelihoods in a reasonable way under a capitalist system…but holy shit, not many of them. And none of the ones you care about unless they’re running a worker’s coop or some other attempt at subverting capitalism within itself, or self-employed. Most of them are one lever of power away from becoming Elon Musk!
